How and why it works

A physiological sigh is two inhales through the nose (a full breath, then a small top-up sip) followed by a long, slow exhale through the mouth.

The second inhale re-opens tiny air sacs in the lungs, and the long exhale helps release carbon dioxide and slows your heart rate. Studies suggest even a few sighs can lower stress quickly.

Questions people ask

How fast does a physiological sigh work?

Many people feel calmer after one to three sighs. A full minute gives your body time to settle.

Should I breathe through my nose or mouth?

Inhale through your nose both times, then breathe out slowly through your mouth.

Can I do it in public?

Yes. It looks like a normal sigh, so you can use it in meetings, on a bus, or before a hard conversation.

Is it safe?

For most people, yes. If you feel dizzy, slow down or return to normal breathing.
